It’s critical that leaders become fully aware of & build the differentiating business & leadership skills that will enable them to successfully lead their company to tackle the challenges that are inherent to their company’s current development stage and to prepare for tackling the challenges that they will face when they’ll hopefully move into the next company development stage. Once the skill gaps have been thoroughly assessed & the game changing individual development objectives defined, the 70-20-10 rule for leadership development, originally designed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), can be applied. According to the 70-20-10 rule, leaders need to have 3 types of experience to learn and grow, following a time ratio of:
- 70% experiential learning: ex. undertake a new challenging assignment, apply new learnings into the day-to-day job & life or hold a mandate as an independent member of a board of directors
- 20% social learning (or learning through others): ex. work with an external coach, a community of peers facing similar challenges or a mentor within the broader group of companies the leader’s company belongs to
- 10% formal learning: ex. follow an MBA program, read an HBR article or listen to podcast
Closing note: an executive leader who operates in an extreme VUCA tech environment, needs awareness & clarity on what pivotal individual development areas he/she will need to focus on.
